Weekend is a movie directed and written by Andrew Haigh which is a movie on identity, happiness and love.
“On a Friday night after a drunken house party with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a gay club, alone and on the pull. Just before closing time he picks up Glen but what’s expected to be just a one-night stand becomes something else, something special. That weekend, in bars and in bedrooms, getting drunk and taking drugs, telling stories and having sex, the two men get to know each other. It is a brief encounter that will resonate throughout their lives. Weekend is both an honest and unapologetic love story between two guys and a film about the universal struggle for an authentic life in all its forms. It is about the search for identity and the importance of making a passionate commitment to your life.” - source
It’s a naturalistic movie. It’s a movie in which you feel you can relate to the characters, it’s either you feel you are either Glen or Russell or one of their friends.
“And then you kissed my hand…”
I love the parts when they talk to each other by themselves. It’s beautiful.
“It’s up to you…”
“I’m not saying people shouldn’t forge relationships, all I’m saying is we don’t need someone to sanction it to make it legitimate, to make us respectable. And don’t tell me people get married because of love…”
“Some people just want to be happy.” “Are you happy?” “I’m fine.
And both characters are absolutely adorable … lovely.
“I’m happy being gay.”
“I couldn’t be more proud of you than if you were the first man on the moon.”
It’s a really beautiful movie. Watch it!
